When the Diocese of Lancaster formally came into being in 1925, its first Bishop, Thomas Wulstan Pearson OSB, led a pilgrimage to Lourdes where he formally placed the Diocese under the patronage of Our Lady of Lourdes. Since then the annual pilgrimage to Lourdes has been an important feature of diocesan life. Here we see Bishop Foley - Lancaster's third Bishop - celebrating Mass in the underground basilica at Lourdes.
